Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings put up 13 goals against one of the best teams in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.
The Wheat Kings and Winnipeg bruins came into the game 2nd and 3rd in the league standings, but Brandon ended up beating them 13-2.
Brandon didn’t start the scoring till 8:15 into the first period, as Dylan Halliday tipped in a Cole Jordan shot from the point.
A minute and a half later, the Wheat Kings scored again as Mitch Thiessen tipped it past Bruins goaltender Kolby Thornton for a 2-0 lead.
Halliday potted his second of the game when he put it past Thornton from an impossible angle.
Carter Sawchuk and Tanner Morrison added to the high-powered first period and Brandon led 5-0 after one.
In the second period, the Wheat Kings and Bruins exchanged goals, which included Lynden McCallum snapping a goalless streak and Dylan Halliday putting it past Thornton for his third goal of the game.
After the second period it was 8-2 for Brandon.
The Bruins changed goaltenders for the start of the third period as Matthew Merkel got put into net.
But it didn’t work or stop the punishment given by the Wheat Kings.
Brett Paddock ended up scoring his second and third goal of the game in the period, as Brandon finished it up with a 13-2 victory.
Brandon goes into the final two weekends with a a lot to play for as they take on the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday February 17 at the Sportsplex.
Brandon has already cliched at least second spot this season, but with a couple of Wild losses and a flawless record for the rest of the season, could overtake first place.
