Thousands show up at the Keystone Centre

If you got your picture taken with Joel Edmundson and the Stanley Cup yesterday you were one of the lucky ones.

Several people joined the line later in the afternoon and waited for more than an hour but were unable to get their souvenir pic.

The line up at the Keystone Centre was longer than the allotted time promoted for the event.

Organizers estimate between 4500 and 5000 people attended the public event.

Edmundson said having the event at the Keystone Centre was the natural choice since he spent many hours at that rinks in the facility during his formative years as a hockey player.

The public event was promoted to run from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and many people lined up much earlier in order to get their picture taken with the cup and Joel, some came as early as 6 a.m.

The Brandon born St. Louis Blues defenceman stayed past the 5 p.m. cut off to try and get as many people through as time would allow before moving on to private previous engagements.

The next stop on his agenda was a suppertime affair with family, friends, former teammates and coaches.

His favourite food is poutine, so arrangements were made with a local restaurant to have Joel prepare enough of the popular Canadian fare to serve over 50 people at the private function.

The lucky attendees were served their tasty supper straight out of the Stanley Cup.

Another private function was held at T-Birds for the remainder of the evening.

Today is a travel day for the toughest trophy to win in sports which is scheduled to be in Toronto to allow for Ontario born Blues players to have their day with the cup.

Nine Blues players hail from Ontario including: Captain Alex Pietrangelo (King City, Ont.), MVP Ryan O'Reilly (Clinton, Ont.) and goaltender Jordan Binnington (Richmond Hill, Ont.).

There are three ways players from Stanley Cup winning teams can get their name engraved on Lord Stanley's chalice: playing one game in the Finals, dressing for 40 games in the regular season, or be petitioned by your team.
