Its bite can cause an allergy to red meat

If you're a hiking enthusiast or just like to spend time out doors, here's yet another reason to check for ticks.

The detection of the Lone Star tick in Winnipeg and other points in southern Manitoba.

This particular tick does not carry Lyme disease however, a bite from an infected tick can cause an allergy to red meat. 

Health officials say there's no cause for alarm as there is no eveidence these particular ticks have populated or even established in this region. 

Still, it's always a good idea to use appropriate tick repellents if you're hitting the hiking trails or spending time outside near grassy areas.
