Raleigh, NC (CKLQ) – The season isn’t over for Brandon Wheat Kings Captain Stelio Mattheos. The 19-year-old Winnipeg, MB native signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday morning.
Mattheos, coming off back to back 90-point seasons with the Wheat Kings will immediately report to the Hurricane’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.
The deal will pay him $700,000 in 2019-20 and 2020-21 and $750,000 in 2021-22 at the NHL level. He will be paid $70,000 per season at the AHL level and receives a signing bonus of $277,500.
Mattheos was a third-round pick of the Hurricane’s back in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, and becomes the 2nd former Wheat King to join the Hurricanes organization this year. Michael Ferland is currently three goals and one assist shy of career highs in both categories through 61 games this season.
It’s been a good week for Mattheos, who was named a WHL 2nd Team All-Star on Wednesday afternoon as well.
