RCMP reminds drivers to slow down approaching accident sites

Brandon, MB (CKLQ) - The RCMP is reminding motorists to slow down and provide a wide berth to emergency vehicles on the highway, after an incident Tuesday.

Souris RCMP and Brandon Police were called to multiple accidents at the intersection of Highway 1 and Provincial Road 250 west of Brandon yesterday afternoon.

Most of the vehicles had slid off the road.  One had rolled.  However, as police and a fire truck attended the initial accidents, another vehicle slid into the back of the fire truck.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Paul Manaigre says one fire fighter sustained minor injuries, and the 21 year old driver of the vehicle is facing imprudent driving charges.

Manaigre says drivers must reduce speed when approaching official vehicles during winter storms, especially in early winter as initial snow falls create icy conditions.

Also, he notes there's Provincial laws in place requiring drivers to travel in the lane furthest away from emergency vehicles, and to reduce speeds when passing.
