The chances of Russell product Jon Montgomery getting to defend his Olympic gold medal have gotten a lot higher.
Montgomery has been promoted to Canada’s World Cup team for this weekend’s men’s skeleton races in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Montgomery has been racing on the second-tier Intercontinental Cup circuit this season but is switching spots with Dave Greszcyszyn for this weekend.
The duo are battling for a possible third Canadian spot in the Sochi Winter Games but also battling athletes from other countries for the remaining berths.
Three countries will be awarded a third men’s sled, and two countries will get an additional women’s spot, with the allotments based upon world rankings.
The complicated system will make the remaining races on both circuits crucial to determining who goes to the games.
Brandon product Cassie Hawrysh will remain on the Intercontinental Cup circuit for this weekend’s race in Park City, Utah.
She’s battling with Robyn Thompson for a possible third women’s spot on the Canadian Olympic team.
