Medicine Hat, AB (CKLQ) – Cole Reinhardt was the hero on Friday night as the Wheat Kings beat the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-3 in overtime.
Stelio Mattheos opened the scoring midway through the first period as he beat 16-year-old call-up Kaeden Lane through the five-hole. The goal was #37 on the year for the Carolina Hurricanes prospect.
A late two many men on the ice penalty would send the Tigers to the powerplay where Ryan Jevne would beat Dylan Myskiw to tie the game up at one.
The Tigers outshot the Wheat Kings 12-3 in the 2nd period, on the heels of two powerplay chances but couldn’t take the lead. Myskiw would go on to make 31 saves on the night.
In the third, the Wheat Kings would take a 3-1 lead on goals from Cole Reinhardt and Evan Weinger (SH). However, the Tigers wouldn’t go away quietly. David Quennville cut the lead to one with his 26th of the year and then set up the game tying goal with just 0:38 left on the clock to force overtime.
In the extra frame, Stelio Mattheos fed a perfect pass to Reinhardt who tipped home his 2nd of the night to lift the Wheat Kings to victory.
The win, was the 3rd OT win over the Tigers this season. All four games in the season series went to overtime, with Brandon finishing 3-0-1-0.
The win snaps a mini two-game losing streak and keeps the Wheat Kings six points up on the Prince Albert Raiders who picked up a win over Edmonton tonight. The Saskatoon Blades had the night off.
The Wheat Kings will continue their road trip Sunday afternoon in Calgary vs the Hitmen. (5:00 MB time on QCountry Radio)
