Sandy Lake rings in the Ukrainian New Year

"Old New Year" put on by the Shevchenko Dance Ensemble

Sandy Lake, MB (CKLQ) - This year's Malanka at Sandy Lake will be celebrated with dance.

The Shevchenko Dance Ensemble is presenting the Malanka, the Ukrainian New Year, on Saturday during the Ukrainian New Year festivities at the Sandy Lake Community Hall.

Many Ukrainians still celebrate the "Old New Year" which is on January 14 on the Gregorian calendar.

The Shevchenko Dance ensemble features performers from all over the Riding Mountain area.

"They come from Minnedosa, Elphinstone and Newdale." said president of the club Tanya Lewandoski-Duncan.

She adds there is a large group of Ukrainians living in Sandy Lake and around the area, which makes the celebrations a must-see event.

Doors open at 7:30pm, with tickets costing $25, or $10 for children between 6 and 15 years of age.
