Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings kick off a mini two-game road trip through Northern Saskatchewan on Friday night in Prince Albert.
For 16-year-old defenseman Braden Schneider, it’s a chance to return to his hometown for the first time since arriving in Brandon for training camp in August.
Schneider, who is in his first full season in the WHL, grew up in Prince Albert, playing all of his minor hockey in the Northern Saskatchewan town. Last season he suited up for the AAA Midget Mintos registering 31 points in 35 games.
Earlier this week, Schneider got the call from Hockey Canada and was named to Canada’s roster for the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge, which will be held in BC in November.
“It’s obviously going to be a great experience,” said Schneider. “It’s my first time representing Canada and I’m super stoked. It should be fun!”
The 6’1" rear-guard is the lone Saskatchewan born resident on the Wheat Kings roster and is excited for a chance to return home and play in front of his family and friends.
“I’m not sure if I’m quite a celebrity there or not yet,” chuckled Schneider. “Mom and Dad will be trying to get a lot of people there, it’s going to be a fun game.”
In 13 games this season, Schneider has logged plenty of ice time while playing in every situation. He has five points in 13 games and is being relied on heavily in the defensive zone.
The prospect for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft says that the team is keeping things simple and that’s been the key to success early in the season.
“We’re a grinding team, we aren’t pretty, we get pucks deep and our work ethic is what separates us from most teams.”
After the stop in Prince Albert on Friday night, the Wheat Kings will head down the highway for a Saturday night matchup with the Saskatoon Blades.
Both games can be heard on Q-Country and 880 AM starting with the pre-game show at 7:30 (MB Time).
