– Brett Friesen stopped all 35 shots he faced as the Yellowhead Chiefs blanked the Southwest Cougars 3-0 in Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League action Wednesday night. Tanner Koroscil had two goals and an assist for the Chiefs while Morgan Geekie scored the other goals for Yellowhead. The victory vaults the Chiefs into sole possession of seventh-place in the standings while Southwest is tied for fifth with the Pembina Valley Hawks.
– The top two teams in the Tiger Hills Hockey League’s Western Division met Wednesday night with the Deloraine Royals skating away with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Souris Elks. The Royals have just one loss in 16 games so far this season but are two points behind the first-place Elks with four games in hand. Jordan Barnes scored in regulation for Deloraine while Brett Arbuckle had the lone goal for Souris.
– Jared McCann of the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds scored the game-winning goal with 3:29 left in the third period to lead Team Orr to a 4-3 win over Team Cherry at the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game Wednesday night in Calgary. Josh Ho-Sang of the Windsor Spitfires had a goal and an assist for Team Orr while Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice had a goal and an assist for Team Cherry.
– The Pittsburgh Penguins set a franchise record with their 13th consecutive home-ice win Wednesday night, beating the Washington Capitals. Olli Maatta scored the winner with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. Among those in attendance at the game were members of the Crocus Plains high school hockey team. The Plainsmen are in Pittsburgh to participate in a tournament that begins Thursday, and had a chance to attend Wednesday’s contest. – It’s a goalie makeover in Edmonton. The Oilers dealt Devan Dubnyk to Nashville yesterday while also acquiring Ben Scrivens from Los Angeles. The Oilers receive forward Matt Hendricks from the Predators, and sent the Kings a third round pick in this year’s draft in exchange for Scrivens.
– The top two women’s volleyball teams in the country are set to square off this weekend when the BU Bobcats visit the UBC Thunderbirds. The Lady ‘Cats are downplaying the matchup. Middle Meaghan Robertson insisting that they need to treat it just like any other match so that they don’t want to psych themselves out while coach Lee Carter says it’s just another step to securing home-court playoff matches. This weekend’s trip to UBC also important for the men’s volleyball team as BU is 7-and-7 and in a precarious position for a playoff spot. – A 15th-place finish for Virden-based Shelby Hall in the Junior Women’s competition at the National Skating Championship in Ottawa. The 16-year old product of Frobisher, Saskatchewan scored a total of 90.39 points.
– Signing for both of Westman’s CFL teams Wednesday. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce the signing of import defensive back Gabe Loper and import linebacker Kenny Tate while the Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed non-import kicker Brett Cameron and non-import fullback Matthew Burke.
– The Manitoba Open gets underway Thursday in Winnipeg. The former MCA Bonspiel features 256 teams, with another 60 or so foursomes to compete in the new half bonspiel that begins Friday. The final four spots in the Safeway Championship will be awarded at the Manitoba Open. Meanwhile, the Brandon Ladies’ Bonspiel will take place this weekend. The ‘spiel will feature 26 teams, down from 32 a year ago.
– The Canadian Junior Curling Championship begins Saturday in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Carberry product Braden Calvert and his team from the Deer Lodge Curling Club will represent Manitoba in the Junior Men’s; Meaghan Brezden from the Granite is the Manitoba rep for the Junior Women’s.
– Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw hit it big. Very big. A person familiar with the deal says the two-time Cy Young award winner has agreed to a seven-year contract with the Dodgers worth 215 million dollars. That would make Kershaw baseball’s first player with an average salary of 30 million dollars. He’ll be paid roughly $150,000 per inning.
