– The Dauphin Kings extended their lead atop the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Sherwood Division Tuesday night. Hudson Morrison scored the overtime winner as the Kings downed OCN 3-2 for their fifth straight win. Dauphin is now four points ahead of the second-place Virden Oil Capitals. Tuesday’s other game saw Parker Thomas scored the overtime winner as Selkirk beat the Winnipeg Blues 4-3.
– Former Wheat King Brayden Schenn notched his 12th goal of the season Tuesday night to help the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres in one of 11 games in the NHL. Meanwhile, Travis Hamonic sat out the New York Islanders 4-2 loss to Florida. The former Wheat Kings’ defenceman is day-to-day with an upper body injury. – Minnesota Wild goalie Josh Harding has been making progress toward a return to playing. The former Wheat King took part in the team skate before the Wild hosted Ottawa yesterday and the plan is for him to participate in practice today. Harding has not played since December 31st due to his recovery from an adjustment to his multiple sclerosis treatment. There’s no timetable yet for his next game in the net. – Westman Wildcats’ forward Megan Robertson has committed to Division Three Augsburg College in Minneapolis for this fall. The Boissevain product is currently second on the team in scoring and scored the triple overtime winner in Westman’s victory in the final of the Mac’s Midget Tournament on New Year’s Day.
– The CIS has decided to make this weekend’s matches for the Brandon University volleyball team even more interesting. BU is up two spots to #2 in this week’s rankings and will be in Vancouver to face the #1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the BU men’s volleyball team fell two spots in the rankings to #7 in the country.
– The trip of a lifetime for Brandon boxer Noel Harding. Harding had a chance to train at the historic Cus D’Amato gym in Catskill, New York last week, where former heavyweight champions Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson got their starts. Harding’s opportunity came after a recruiter saw one of Harding’s knockouts on the internet. Harding is hoping his training session will lead to signing a contract with Iron Mike Productions.
– The Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week is Logan Biccum of the Virden Golden Bears girls’ basketball team. Biccum is averaging 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists per game this season.
– A U.S. federal judge is slowing down the proposed 765-million-dollar settlement of NFL concussion claims, and is questioning if there’s enough money to cover 20-thousand retired players. Judge Anita Brody is also concerned that anyone who gets concussion damages from the NFL would be barred from suing the NCAA or other amateur football leagues.
– The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are entering the wedding business. Starting this summer, the CFL team will rent out its stadium for two hours at a time so a couples can tie the knot. Investors Group Field is ideal for couples who plan to have up to 33-thousand wedding guests.
– Mixed martial arts star Georges St-Pierre says the UFC’s hesitation to implement stiffer drug testing influenced his decision to step away from the sport. St-Pierre vacated his welterweight title in December, citing a need to lead a normal life and deal with mental fatigue. But the 32-year-old said the UFC didn’t support him when he proposed drug testing leading up to his controversial split decision over Johnny Hendricks.
