Edmonton, AB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings earned a single-point in a 4-3 shootout loss in Edmonton on Tuesday night.
It didn’t take long for the Wheat Kings to get on the board. Just 1:01 into the hockey game, Ridly Greig snapped home his 10th of the year on a great feed from Ben McCartney.
The star of the show in the first period was Ethan Kruger. Making his 2nd consecutive start, the Sherwood Park, AB native kicked aside 17 first period shots. He finished with 46 saves.
It was another quick start for the Wheat Kings in the 2nd period as Ben McCartney lit the lamp just 1:05 into the middle frame. A gaff at the Edmonton line lead to a two-on-none lead by Captain Stelio Mattheos. The Carolina Hurricanes prospect chose to pass and his linemate made no mistake to open up a two-goal lead.
Midway through the period, Luka Burzan would tap home his 27th of the year after a goalmouth scramble. Burzan was in the right spot at the right time and gave Brandon a 3-0 lead.
Edmonton would break the goose egg just two minutes later. After the Wheat Kings successfully killed a penalty, the Oil Kings kept possession in the offensive zone and Trey Fix-Wolansky slid a back door pass to Vladimir Alistrov who made poked in his 7th of the year.
The Oil Kings poured it on in the third period, outshooting the Wheat Kings 17-3. After Josh Williams pulled Edmonton within one, Braydyn Chizen was handed a five-minute major penalty for checking to the head.
The play, which went unpenalized on the play was the turning point of the game. Andrew Fyten would tie the game on the powerplay and send the game to overtime.
Despite several chances at both ends, neither team could find the back of the net in the extra frame and we headed to a shootout for the 2nd straight game.
The only shooter to score in the shootout was Trey Fix-Wolansky. The Columbus Blue Jacket draft pick sent the crowd of 5,299 home happy with the game winner.
15-year-old Jake Chiasson made his WHL debut on Tuesday night, playing on a line with Lynden McCallum and Marcus Sekundiak. The 15th overall pick in the 2018 Bantam Draft finished the night even and was a perfect 3/3 in the faceoff circle.
Brandon scratched Baron Thompson (Upper Body), Linden McCorrister (Upper Body), Chad Nychuk (Healthy) & Jiri Patera (Lower Body). Connor Ungar was the backup to Ethan Kruger.
The Wheat Kings four-game Alberta road trip continues tomorrow night in Red Deer. (8:00 MB time on QCountry Radio.)
